Gluten-Free
Our Guide to Gluten-Free Chocolate
Although none of the main ingredients of chocolate (cacao, sugar, milk powder and sometimes soy or sunflower emulsifiers) do not in themselves contain gluten, many chocolate makers avoid claiming to be gluten-free due to the possibility of cross-contamination. This can come from other products handled on site or from products processed on the same machinery. They may also add inclusions or flavourings to bars containing gluten, such as pretzels or cereal-based ingredients, such as wafers or biscuits.
While we cannot 100% guarantee the absence of traces of gluten, this selection of chocolates is based on bars by chocolate makers who
- label or advertise their products as “gluten-free” or
- state that their products are "free from gluten" or
- say they do not use any gluten their factory
We provide information to help you make informed decisions about your chocolate purchases. It’s essential to check the ingredients and allergy information on the packaging when you receive your chocolate bar, just in case of any recent changes.
If you have a mild gluten intolerance and would be unaffected by traces or minimal quantities of gluten, you may want to look at our selection of bars with Without Gluten Ingredients instead.
